About Us.

Hi. I’m Sean. I started in Chicago, performed at a bunch of colleges and JFL. Opened Westside Comedy Theater w/ friends in 2008. The Glendale Room happened because, during the pandemic, I bought a full size shipping container full of old books for reasons I’m still figuring out.

And who came before Sean? Well…

Inspired by coffee-house theaters across Europe that he toured with his acting troupe, our Owner & Founder Alan Becker set out almost 20 years ago to transform the warehouse-like Lyric Hyperion Theater in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, into a comfortable hub for local writers, actors, and musicians to share good work, good conversation and good food.

Al led his theater crew to remodel the stage space by hand, adding windows, soundproofing and a patio, and then oversaw creation of a new lobby to house the Lyric Café.

Back in the 1970s and 80s, the building was a popular gay restaurant called the Frog Pond, and then for 17 years was home to LA’s oldest repertory theater troupe, Company of Angels, which was started in the early 60s by actors Leonard Nimoy and Richard Chamberlain.

We acknowledge all the friends who have helped keep the heart of the Lyric Hyperion beating over the years. Each team committed their blood, sweat and beers to make things a bit better than before:

·Company of Angels, resident troupe - 2 years with us (& 15 years before).

·West Coast Ensemble, resident troupe - 1 year.

·Lisa, initial cafe designer/operator- 3 years.

·Kevin & Angela, cafe operator- 6 months.

·Alexandra, cafe operator 6 months.

·Diller, cafe operator - 3 years.

·Mark, theater and cafe operator- 3.5 years.

·Phil, Lo & Co., theater and cafe operator - 18 months (& 14 shut down by Covid).

·Brandon & Kaela, theater and café operators – 1 year.

·And as of December 2022, Sean & Anne, theater & café operators!

·Al (Founder and Owner, sometimes theater director) – all the years!
